CDC announced that this outbreak is over, as of October 06, 2021. To this date, a total of 31 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium were reported from 4 states: IL, MI, PA and WI. 4 were hospitalized and no deaths were reported. Illnesses started on dates ranging from June 10, 2021, to August 18, 2021.

As of July 22, 2021, a total of 11 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium have been reported from 3 states (IL, MI and WI). 2 people were hospitalized and no deaths were reported. The investigation is ongoing.

As of July 16, 2021, a total of 9 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium have been reported from two states (IL and WI). 1 person was hospitalized and no deaths were reported. The Recall for BrightFarms salad products linked to this outbreak was issued by FDA on July 16, 2021. The investigation is ongoing.

CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are collecting different types of data to investigate a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium infections.
As of July 14, 2021, 8 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium have been reported from two states (IL and WI). No one has been hospitalized and no deaths were reported. Illnesses started on dates ranging from June 10, 2021, to June 15, 2021.
Epidemiologic and traceback data show that BrightFarms brand Sunny Crunch salad may be contaminated with Salmonella and may be making people sick.
You can identify BrightFarms brand Sunny Crunch salad by the following characteristics:
- Green leaf lettuce in a plastic clamshell container
- Labeled with “fresh from Rochelle, IL”
- Distributed to at least four states (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin)
- Any “best by” date
CDC advises people not to eat, sell, or serve BrightFarms brand Sunny Crunch salad produced in Rochelle, IL. Throw it away or return it to where you bought it. Even if some of the salad was eaten and no one got sick, throw the rest away or return it.
