The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LAC DPH) is investigating a cluster of Brucella melitensis infections linked to the consumption of unpasteurized cheese imported from Mexico. The outbreak has affected several adults in South Los Angeles County, with brucellosis being the identified pathogen.Brucellosis is a rare infection in Los Angeles County, with fewer than 15 cases reported annually. The disease is typically transmitted through raw or unpasteurized dairy products from infected animals, such as goats and cows. Symptoms include fever, night sweats, fatigue, and joint pain. The current cluster highlights the risks associated with consuming unpasteurized dairy products.
The outbreak was discovered after multiple patients presented with symptoms consistent with brucellosis and reported consuming unpasteurized cheese. Health professionals are advised to consider brucellosis in patients with relevant symptoms and a history of consuming such dairy products. The LAC DPH continues to monitor the situation and advises caution regarding the consumption of unpasteurized dairy.
