California is facing a significant health crisis due to an outbreak of severe illnesses and deaths linked to the consumption of poisonous wild mushrooms. Since November 18, 2025, there have been 47 reported cases and four deaths statewide. Recently, three non-residents were hospitalized after consuming foraged mushrooms in Napa County's Deer Park area.The outbreak has been attributed to recent rains, which have led to a resurgence of poisonous wild mushrooms throughout California, including Napa County. Dr. Christine Wu, Napa County Public Health Officer, emphasized that these mushrooms can closely resemble safe varieties, posing a risk even to experienced foragers. The affected individuals in Napa County consumed mushrooms found between Deer Park Road, Fawn Road, and Silverado Trail.
The problem was identified after the hospitalization of the three adults over the weekend. Health officials have since issued warnings about the dangers of consuming wild mushrooms, highlighting that cooking or processing does not neutralize their toxicity. The situation underscores the importance of public awareness and caution in areas where wild mushrooms are prevalent.
