Outbreak
Denmark
In a recent outbreak in Denmark, 43 cases of Salmonella monophasic Typhimurium sequence type 34 were registered by the Statens Serum Institut during April and May 2024. The Institut, along with the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and the Norwegian Food Institute DTU, are currently investigating the outbreak. The 43 individuals infected with the same type of Salmonella were identified across the country, with 27 men and 16 women affected. The patients range in age from 3 to 85 years, with a median age of 40 years. The highest number of patients were reported in the capital, followed by Southern Denmark, Central Jutland, Northern Jutland, and Zealand.
The Central Outbreak Group, comprising of the Statens Serum Institut, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, and the DTU Food Institute, is managing the outbreak. The group is conducting whole-genome sequencing of isolates from the patients and interviewing patients to identify a potential source of infection. The bacteria isolated from the patients were found to be closely related and all belonged to sequence type 34.
Salmonella is a common cause of bacterial intestinal infections in Denmark, with over 2,500 different types identified. The incubation period for the disease ranges from 6 to 72 hours, typically manifesting symptoms within 12 to 36 hours of infection.
In case you are experiencing Salmonella symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
