Onset: IMMEDIATELY Duration: 5 days and counting I was immediately sick off the red curry with tofu within just a few bites! Was a very strong ammonia taste present and the moment I tasted it, I was already puking. My meal was delivered to me directly, no... additional stops and it came in less than 20 minutes. Symptoms: projectile vomiting(the un- digested food), severe headache, burning sensation in nasal cavity, mouth, gums and teeth and eventually diarrhea. I felt feverish and dizzy, weak and and legs were cramping. I landed in the ER when the pain in my stomach and burning sensations increased. The plastic container with the curry was siting in the sink, but had to dump it and then take it out in a separate bag because the bizarre smell was THAT strong and was choking me up and making my eyes water. #broccoli #tofu #redcurry | Symptoms: Nausea, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Fever, Headache, Cramps, Dizziness, Weakness, Stomach Pain
Update September 12, 2023
As of Sept. 12, there were 264 lab-confirmed cases of E. coli connected to this outbreak. 25 individuals have been hospitalized. Among them, 22 have received confirmation of suffering from hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a severe condition resulting from E. coli infection. Additionally,... 6 patients are undergoing peritoneal dialysis at Alberta Children’s Hospital. Children with severe illness are currently in stable conditions and are receiving the necessary care within the hospital. Meanwhile, other children and their families are receiving care and support at three outpatient clinics established within Calgary hospitals.
The central kitchen utilized by the daycares underwent a total of five inspections this year. The most recent inspection occurred on September 5th, prompted by the proactive closure of the kitchen in response to the outbreak. This inspection revealed 3 critical violations pertaining to food handling, sanitization, and pest control. Additionally, two non-critical violations were identified concerning an odor issue and the storage of utensils.
A detailed investigation is currently underway to determine the source of the contamination, which is believed to be a food source from the central kitchen used by the daycares.

Alberta Health Service (AHS) is investigating an E. coli outbreak linked to a Calgary daycare operator. They identified the outbreak across 6 locations of a Calgary daycare and 5 additional sites that share a central kitchen. To date, 17 lab-confirmed cases have been linked to the outbreak, as well as 12 individuals hospitalized, and up to 50 children presenting to hospital. Investigation into the source of the outbreak within the facilities is ongoing, with heightened scrutiny on the shared central kitchen among the involved daycare centers.
The subsequent locations, all situated in Calgary, have received a closure order until issues are resolved:
- Fueling Brains Braeside
- Fueling Brains West 85th
- Fueling Brains New Brighton
- Fueling Brains Centennial
- Fueling Brains Bridgeland
- Fueling Brains McKnight
As well as:
- Braineer Academy
- Kidz Space
- Little Oak Early Education (formerly Mangrove)
- Almond Branch School
- Vik Academy in Okotoks
Alberta Health Service (AHS) acknowledges the predominant symptom of E.coli, diarrhea, tends to surface one to 10 days after consumption of contaminated food. In light of this, families with children attending any of these facilities have been advised to be vigilant for signs of sickness and take action should symptoms emerge.
In case you are experiencing E. coli symptoms such as watery diarrhea (often bloody), vomiting; stomach cramps; and mild fever, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
Oakland County Health Division announced a suspected case of Hepatitis A associated with the Ivy Lounge at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston. The Health Division requests all attendees, their guests, and staff who consumed food there between August 26 – September 8 to remain vigilant.
This... suspected Hepatitis A exposure has prompted the Health Division to take a proactive approach for the protection of the Theatre's season members, their guests, and staff. Authorities advise monitoring for symptoms like sudden abdominal pain, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, headache, dark urine, and vomiting, followed by yellowing of the skin and eyes. Vaccination is recommended for those who have not received adequate immunization, especially if they consumed food at the Ivy Lounge during the first week of September.
Dr. Russell Faust, Oakland County medical director, noted that while the risk of transmission in this specific situation is considered low, immediate vaccination remains vital. Hepatitis A – a liver infection caused by a virus – boasts an incubation period of two to six weeks. The virus is most commonly spread through contact with contaminated substances, emphasizing the importance of hygiene and vaccination.
Unvaccinated people who may have been exposed between September 1-8 are encouraged to receive the vaccine urgently. The health department recommended the following actions based on exposure dates:
Exposure Date -- Recommended Action
Aug. 26 (Lynyrd Skynyrd concert) -- Monitor for symptoms
Aug. 29 (Arctic Monkeys concert)-- Monitor for symptoms
Aug. 30 (Foreigner concert)-- Monitor for symptoms
Sept. 1 (Disturbed concert)-- Get vaccinated by Sept. 15
Sept. 2 (Beck and Phoenix concert) -- Get vaccinated by Sept. 16
Sept. 3 (Pentatonix concert) -- Get vaccinated by Sept. 17
Sept. 5 (Rob Zombie concert-- Get vaccinated by Sept. 19
Sept. 6 (Smashing Pumpkins concert) -- Get vaccinated by Sept. 20
Sept. 8 (Jason Aldean concert) -- Get vaccinated by Sept. 22
It is crucial to reiterate that hand-washing with soap and warm water, alongside regular disinfection in homes and workplaces, are effective preventive measures. The health division also warns against preparing food if symptomatic, recommending a waiting period extending to a few days past the resolution of symptoms.
In case you experienced Hepatitis A symptoms, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve issues and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance.
