Five Probable Cases of Botulism Linked to Artisanal Pesto in Indre-et-Loire

1 month ago source sante.gouv.fr

Outbreak

Centre-Val de Loire, France

The Regional Health Agency of Centre-Val-de-Loire has reported five probable cases of botulism linked to the consumption of artisanal Wild Garlic Pesto from the brand "O Ptits Oignons" in France. The affected individuals, who showed symptoms suggestive of botulism, were part of a family meal. Due to the artisanal production conditions, which do not guarantee the sterilization of the jars, a recall of all manufactured jars was immediately decided as a precaution. The pesto preserves were sold at several events in the Indre-et-Loire department.

It should be noted that cans of this pesto were sold at the following events (Indre et Loire department):

- Plant and Spring Festival at the Château de la Bourdaisière in Montlouis-sur-Loire, from March 30 to April 1, 2024;
- “Nature in celebration” festival at the Château de Cangé in Saint-Avertin, April 13 and 14, 2024;
- Garlic and Basil Fair in Tours, July 26, 2024;
- Tomato and flavors festival at the Château de la Bourdaisière in Montlouis-sur-Loire, September 7 and 8, 2024.

The outbreak was traced back to the consumption of the pesto made by a local producer. The leftover food from the meal, including the pesto, has been sent to the Pasteur Institute for analysis. The results are expected within two days.

Given the incubation period (from a few hours to a few days) and the serious nature of the disease, people who have consumed these products are urged to be extremely vigilant and to consult a doctor if they experience symptoms (vision problems, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, difficulty speaking), mentioning this alert. People who still have these product are advised to not consume and return it to where they purchased it.

In case you experience Botulism symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain, report it now. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
