Hankook Original Kimchi linked to multiprovince E. coli Outbreak

4 years ago source canada.ca

Canada

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is collaborating with the CFIA to investigate an outbreak of E. coli O157 infections involving Alberta and Saskatchewan. Based on the investigation findings to date, the outbreak is linked to Hankook (Korean characters only) brand Original Kimchi. As of January 28, 2022; 14 laboratory-confirmed cases were reported in Alberta (13) and Saskatchewan (1). No deaths or hospitalizations have been reported.

Individuals became sick between early December 2021 and early January 2022. The investigation is ongoing. The CFIA issued a food recall warning on January 28 for certain Hankook (Korean characters only) brand Kimchi products. The recalled product was distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

Do not eat, use, sell, or serve the recalled kimchi or any products made with the recalled kimchi. This advice applies to individuals, as well as retailers, distributors, manufacturers and food service establishments such as hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals and long-term care homes, across Canada.

In case you are experiencing E. coli symptoms such as watery diarrhea (often bloody), vomiting; stomach cramps; and mild fever, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance.
