Local media in South Bend, IN, report that nearly two dozen inmates at St. Joseph County Jail are affected by a Salmonella outbreak. A total of 23 inmates fell ill on April 29, experiencing symptoms such as diarrhea, dehydration, and fever. The outbreak was identified when the jail’s medical staff diagnosed the illnesses as Salmonella infections. County and state health departments are actively investigating to pinpoint the source of the outbreak. An inspection of the jail kitchen by the Health Department on April 25, just days before the outbreak, revealed no critical violations. However, minor issues such as standing water near a dish machine and mold on wire racks in a cooler were corrected immediately.
Most affected inmates have recovered, though a few are still receiving treatment. Jail staff are collaborating with food service and medical providers, as well as health departments, to identify the outbreak's cause and implement necessary corrective measures.
