As of February 8, 2023, 32 people reported becoming ill after eating food from the Tamarind Tree Restaurant. These 32 people ate at this restaurant January 14 - 17, 2023, and started having symptoms January 17 – 20, 2022. No one has been hospitalized and no deaths were reported. The Seattle & King County Public Health determined the pathogen in this outbreak is Shigella. 10 of the 32 people who became ill tested positive for Shigella. 6 cases have confirmatory testing indicating Shigella sonnei, a species of Shigella. Symptoms among those who did not get tested are suggestive of a Shigella infection.

As of January 27, 2023, 17 people from 7 separate meal parties reported becoming ill after eating food from the Tamarind Tree Restaurant. These 17 people ate at this restaurant on January 15, 16, and 17, 2023. No one has been hospitalized and no deaths were reported.

The Seattle & King County Public Health announced they are investigating a gastrointestinal illness outbreak linked to the Tamarind Tree Restaurant located at 1036 S Jackson St A Seattle, WA 98104. As of January 24, 2023, 10 people from 3 separate meal parties have reported becoming ill after eating food from this restaurant on January 15 and 16, 2023. Public Health has not identified any ill employees.
Environmental Health investigators visited the restaurant on January 24, 2023. They observed improper food handling practices, including blocked access to handwashing facilities, improper storage of wiping cloths, risk of cross-contamination, and lack of maintenance, cleaning, and sanitizing of food equipment and physical facilities. Investigators closed the restaurant during their visit on January 24, 2023. The restaurant was required to complete a thorough cleaning and disinfection.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to the consumption of this product.
The recalled product is:
- Various weights corrugated boxes containing “Elkhorn Valley Pride Angus Beef 61226 BEEF CHUCK 2PC BNLS; Packed on 2/16/23.” The complete list of serial numbers and box count numbers for the boneless beef chuck product that are subject to recall can be found in the image below.
The product subject to recall was packed on Feb. 16, 2023 and bears the Establishment number “EST. M-19549” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The recall was initiated when FSIS testing of ground beef derived from the product revealed a positive result for STEC O103. STEC O103 can cause diarrhea (often bloody) and vomiting, typically appearing 2-8 days (average of 3-4 days) after consumption. Most people recover within a week, but, rarely, some develop a more severe infection. Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure, is uncommon but can occur in people of any age, particularly young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
Consumers are advised not to use or further distribute the product, and to throw it away or return it to the place of purchase. To ensure the product is cooked to a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria, a food thermometer should be used to measure the internal temperature.

Yesterday 3/7 bought the Good & Gather Avocado Toast pre-washed ready to eat salad kit for lunch. I have had it many times before. This time, I started to get stomach cramps afterwards. I am Still sick today. Missing work for two days now so far - hundreds of dollars. Tried calling the Target no one will pick up. Will contact Public Health Dept, CDC, FDA, and corporate next. This store already is a health hazard with all the mold in the ceiling and water every time it rains for years not getting it properly remediated, letting mold spores shoot all over the place including on bare produce. It wouldn’t surprise me if they are not storing things at safe temperatures at all times and that they caused this bacteria to be present in the food I purchased.
