“Reading recent accounts similar to this have made me nauseous because not too long ago my husband and I vacationed at Hard Rock Hotel in Punta Cana. Day 1: I got severely sick that very first day from the food or beverage, or combination of both. I truly feel the meal at dinner was what did it. I remember leaving the restaurant and not feeling well. The margaritas were awful, tasted like detergent. I just remember that first night after dinner I felt awful and started to look deathly ill, very pale and was very weak. Vomiting, diarrhea, light headed and just felt useless. We had one week there and that was just day one. For the remainder of the week I consumed crackers and Gatorade that I forced the hotel to provide me with daily at their expense during my stay. The Hard Rock did not believe me when I reported I got sick after eating and drinking on their resort. They tried to force me to go to a local hospital and I didn’t feel safe doing that. Something about this situation didn’t feel right. Within the first 24 hours I complained so many times and tried to speak to someone who would listen to me. Finally, I was granted a meeting with the Hard Rock’s Food & Beverage Manager. The Manager CONFIRMED they had issues handling the food, beverage and maintaining health code standards, that the staff still needed a lot of training. I reacted explosively to this. This Manager assured me it will get better. It did not. And obviously still has not after recent news involving similar situations and even after deaths. I kept complaining every day I was there, sharing I was still not well because I really was not and did not want them to dismiss me. I demanded the Gatorade and crackers every day. My husband ate what I ate to be safe, too. The hotel kept trying to erase the situation with free spa passes. We already had used the spa with the package we originally bought on the resort. They added additional credits for more services and we didn’t use it all - I was not comfortable. I also was not secure in myself to be too far away from a sink or toilet for too much time. I continued to complain to whoever I could even after leaving DR. When I finally spoke to someone from one of the higher offices he surrendered to the hotel’s lack of standards and admitted to the difficult experiences the hotel had in maintaining healthy and safe standards with the staff in DR. I told him besides the sun there was nothing else that could be liked. I was too weak to even pick up and leave earlier than when our departure date was to be. He refunded me. And he refunded me too easily once I spoke to him. At that moment I realized that Hard Rock acknowledged the issues and that I was not the first one. This is when I wrote off any future warm weather destinations in DR. The world has so many other places to explore. I’m sure I had some kind of poisoning and so happy it didn’t take my last breath away. I’m so happy my husband and I returned home together.”
