Public Health Wales has confirmed that 43 individuals have fallen ill with food poisoning after consuming Sunday lunch at the Corner House Inn in Llangynwyd, near Maesteg, Bridgend county. The outbreak, which occurred on November 30, has been attributed to Clostridium perfringens, a bacterium known to cause stomach cramps and diarrhea. The incident prompted an investigation by Public Health Wales, in collaboration with the Cwm Taf Morgannwg health board and local environmental health authorities. The investigation revealed that the bacterium was the source of the outbreak, affecting patrons who dined at the pub on the specified date. Clostridium perfringens is commonly found in the environment and can survive cooking, posing a risk when food is not stored at safe temperatures.
The problem was discovered after multiple reports of illness were received from customers who had eaten at the pub. Following these reports, the Corner House Inn temporarily closed its doors and conducted a thorough cleaning of the premises. The pub has since reopened and resumed normal operations. Public Health Wales has stated that the risk to the public is low, and no further cases are expected.
