Public Health officials have completed an investigation into a gastrointestinal illness outbreak linked to Marlaina's Mediterranean Kitchen in Burien, Washington. The outbreak, which affected 11 individuals, was consistent with a bacterial toxin, though no specific food or drink was identified as the cause. The outbreak was traced back to an event catered by Marlaina's Mediterranean Kitchen on September 20, 2025, with symptoms appearing the following day. Affected individuals experienced symptoms such as diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, headache, and fatigue. The investigation revealed that the restaurant had been using unsafe food cooling procedures, which likely contributed to the growth of bacterial toxins in two dishes served at the event.
The issue came to light on September 23, 2025, when several attendees reported illness. Public Health distributed a survey on September 25, 2025, to gather more information. A site visit on October 8, 2025, confirmed the improper cooling practices. Although no laboratory testing was conducted due to the rapid onset and resolution of symptoms, the investigation concluded with educational measures provided to the restaurant to prevent future occurrences.
