Health Officials Warn Against Consuming Raw Milk

1 year ago source marincounty.gov

California, United States

Marin County Public Health (MCPH) has reported a suspected case of bird flu in a child who fell ill after consuming raw milk. The child has since recovered, and no other family members have fallen ill, suggesting no person-to-person transmission.

The case is currently under investigation by MCPH, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDPH issued an alert on December 6, urging healthcare providers to evaluate and test for human avian flu (H5N1) in individuals who develop flu-like symptoms after consuming raw milk. This comes in light of significant bird flu outbreaks among dairy cows, wild birds, and sporadic human cases.

The case was discovered when the child developed a fever and vomiting after consuming raw milk. Bird flu infections in humans are rare, but there have been ongoing outbreaks in dairy cattle and poultry farms in the United States. So far, 32 confirmed cases of bird flu have been reported in California this year. Most detections have been among poultry and dairy workers exposed to sick animals.

This case highlights the importance of understanding how diseases can spread from animals to humans, especially through food. Raw milk, which hasn't been pasteurized, poses a risk of spreading diseases, including influenza. These food-borne bacteria and viruses can be particularly dangerous for people with weak immune systems, as well as children, older adults, and pregnant women.

Healthcare providers are advised to consider avian influenza A (H5N1) in persons with fever, gastrointestinal, respiratory symptoms, and/or conjunctivitis who have recently consumed raw milk products or have been exposed to animals suspected or confirmed to have avian influenza. They should contact MCPH immediately for technical assistance on collecting respiratory specimens for testing.

If you or a loved one are harmed or experiencing any symptoms, it is important to report it. Reporting can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
