Outbreak in New Zealand. 150 students at University of Canterbury student

Outbreak

New Zealand

New Zealand Food Safety is investigating shredded chicken as the potential cause of illness for over 150 students at the University of Canterbury student accommodation. The students reported falling ill during their exam period after consuming a meal served on Sunday night. Those who did not partake in the meal did not report any sickness. The NZ Food Safety deputy director-general, Vincent Arbuckle, stated that the time between the consumption of the food and the onset of symptoms suggests unsafe handling practices around the cooling, reheating, and hot holding of the chicken.

The issue was discovered when the National Public Health Service was notified of the mass illness on Monday morning. Food safety officers are currently reviewing the kitchen's processes, interviewing staff, and inspecting the kitchen to confirm the cause of the outbreak. The university is working closely with the caterers and NZ Food Safety to prevent a recurrence.

If you or a loved one are harmed or experiencing any symptoms, it is important to report it. Reporting can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
