A multi-country outbreak of Salmonella Bovismorbificans ST377 infections has been linked to the consumption of alfalfa sprouted seeds. Between January and May 2026, 109 confirmed cases were reported across 10 EU/EEA countries (Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Spain, the Netherlands) and the United Kingdom, with 18 hospitalizations and two deaths in Finland. The outbreak predominantly affected adult females and was traced back to alfalfa sprouted seeds traded from Italy. Microbiological evidence, including the detection of the outbreak strain in water samples from the Netherlands and Northern Ireland, confirmed the seeds as the infection source. A Finnish producer was linked to cases in Finland, and investigations in Italy identified a common seed supplier in India, suggesting the contamination's origin. The outbreak strain likely began circulating in Europe in October 2025.
The problem was discovered through epidemiological and microbiological evidence, which identified the alfalfa seeds as the primary vehicle of infection. Control measures, such as product recalls and cessation of production, have been implemented, leading to a decrease in case notifications. However, further infections may occur until the contamination source is fully controlled. Public health and food safety authorities continue to investigate and implement measures to ensure consumer safety.
