####Update December 6th, 2024
The Salmonella outbreak initially reported by FHI on November 28, 2024, continues to grow, with 26 new cases confirmed. This brings the total number of infections in Norway to 49.

The affected individuals are spread across various regions: Vestland (13), Rogaland (6), Akershus (5), Trøndelag (5), Møre og Romsdal (4), Østfold (4), Oslo (3), Innlandet (2), Telemark (2), Agder (1), Vestfold (1), Nordland (1), Troms (1), and Finnmark (1).

Out of the 49 cases, 42 have been identified as Salmonella Newport infections, while the remaining 7 involve Salmonella Typhimurium.

Norwegian officials are currently investigating a national Salmonella outbreak, potentially linked to alfalfa sprouts. The Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI) has reported 23 cases of Salmonella Newport across nine regions in Norway. The outbreak, which has been ongoing since mid-October, has affected individuals aged between 18 and 79, with a median age of 48. The majority of those affected are women, with 16 out of the 23 cases. Eight individuals have been hospitalized. The genetic profile of the bacteria detected in all patients suggests a common source of infection.

The FHI, in collaboration with Mattilsynet (The Norwegian Food Safety Authority), the Veterinary Institute, and local authorities, has identified a potential link to sprouts. Several of the infected individuals reported consuming sprouts prior to falling ill. Earlier this year, a similar increase in Salmonella cases was observed, with sprouts suspected as the cause.

The suspicion is based on patient interviews, epidemiological data, patients' purchasing information, and product distribution patterns. Mattilsynet is currently sampling food, packaging, and production environments to test for Salmonella and determine any potential links to the outbreak.

Norske Spirer, a local producer, has recalled products containing organic alfalfa sprouts from the market. The recall applies to all packs and dates currently on sale and in the supply chain. The products are sold in various grocery stores across the country.

As a result, consumers are advised to discard any sprouts purchased in recent weeks, including products containing alfalfa sprouts.
