A salmonella outbreak linked to cashew butter has sickened dozens of young children in Germany and Austria, health officials have warned. The outbreak involves Salmonella Infantis, with 52 cases reported in Germany and 13 in Austria, primarily affecting children under five, including 24 hospitalizations in Germany. The outbreak was first detected in Germany in late May, with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) confirming the cases. The source of the outbreak has been traced to a raspberry-flavored cashew butter, which has since been recalled. The product was sold in supermarkets across Germany and has also been distributed in several other European countries, although no additional cases have been reported outside Germany and Austria as of June 4.
The problem was discovered after health authorities conducted interviews with parents of affected children, which led to the identification of the contaminated cashew butter. The ECDC has warned that due to the product's long shelf-life, there is a potential for more cases to emerge. The agency is actively monitoring the situation and has requested further data sharing from other countries to analyze the outbreak-linked salmonella samples.
