Salmonella outbreak linked to Hotel Izán Cavanna in Spain

5 months ago source elmundo.es business

s/n Plaza del Cavanna, La Manga, 30380 Región de Murcia, Spain

Over a hundred people have been affected by a Salmonella outbreak at a hotel in La Manga del Mar Menor, Murcia. The outbreak has resulted in two hospitalizations, though neither case is severe. Symptoms reported include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and in some instances, fever.

The outbreak appears to have originated during lunch on Saturday. Initial microbiological tests from hospitalized patients confirmed Salmonella as the causative agent. In response, the hotel's kitchen operations have been temporarily suspended, and a thorough cleaning and disinfection of the facilities have been ordered by health authorities.

The issue was identified when affected individuals began experiencing symptoms on Saturday afternoon. Emergency services mobilized five units to provide on-site care, and 20 patients were taken to the Hospital Santa Lucía's emergency department for evaluation. All but two have been discharged. Health officials, including epidemiologists and food safety inspectors, are collecting food samples and conducting tests on food handlers to pinpoint the outbreak's source.
