Whole Foods was once "the place" to buy the healthiest foods and were priced as such! No doubt they still are overpriced, but I've been shocked at all the food poisoning reports coming out of that store. There's one just a bit further from us than Harris Teeter & Publix, but we determined a few years ago they weren't worth the extra mileage and pricing, so we've stuck with HT & Publix and thankful for it. Meanwhile I've gotten sick from Birds Eye frozen vegetables (& company expressed ZERO concern!). Another food that is one of the most popular in the USA is deli prepared Chicken Salads. I got food poisoning from eating a small amount of freshly bought product from HT. The positioning of it in the store is such that one would think it was freshly made there. The manager very much apologized to my husband who returned it not just for a refund but to warn them to get it out of their deli case, perhaps their kitchen wasn't sanitary or someone working in it wasn't following sanitary procedures. The manager kindly apologized again, offered an extra store credit and told my husband that the positioning of the product implies it's made fresh there, but it's NOT! It's made at some central location & distributed to a large number of local stores, that they had no way of knowing what conditions were at the central plant, how long the product sat before being distributed and transport conditions. FYI, my further investigating indicates that "store bought" chicken salad caused an inordinate amount of food poisoning! Prep your own at home & just hope the ingredients you buy to make it are as fresh as they claim!
