The Fresh Market, Good & Gather and more Organic Basil - recalled due to possible Cyclospora contamination
November 24, 2020 6:01 PM
“Company name: Shenandoah Growers, Inc
Brand name: The Fresh Market, Good & Gather and more
Product recalled: Organic Basil
Reason of the recall: Possible Cyclospora contamination
FDA Recall date: November 24, 2020
Recall details: Shenandoah Growers, Inc (Harrisonburg, VA) out of an abundance of... caution, has issued a limited, voluntary recall of approximately 15,000 units in select packages, due to a possible health risk from Cyclospora. These were packed under branded and private label fresh cut organic certified basil clamshells at its Jefferson, GA facility and Harrisonburg, VA facility with the following lot codes, all with the country of origin of Colombia.
Recalled products were distributed to select retail stores between 10/20/2020 and 10/30/2020 in various states including Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Washington DC. Click on the link below to see the full list of affected lot codes.
The Shenandoah Growers recall includes only those clamshells of certified organic basil clearly marked with the affected lot codes listed above. The lot code can be found printed on each clamshell. This precautionary recall notification is being issued due to an isolated instance in which a package pulled by the Florida Department of Agriculture on 11/2/2020 from a retail store in Florida indicated the potential presence of Cyclospora.
Affected Shenandoah Growers customers have been notified of the recall and instructed to immediately remove and discard recalled products from all store shelves, distribution and other inventories to ensure they are no longer available for sale or consumption. These products were harvested and packed nearly 4 weeks ago and should no longer be in commerce.
No other Shenandoah Growers products are subject to recall, and the company has no knowledge of any illness reported or related to this product. Consumers who may have a recalled basil product should discard it immediately and not eat it. Consumers with questions, or to obtain refunds, may contact the Shenandoah Growers Consumer Response Center at 844-896-6939 Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm Eastern time.

“Was a to go order picked up at 9:30 on 10/30/2020. Ate chile rellano, cheese enchilada, rice, and beans. Was served with a little lettuce and sour cream. Took it home and ate right away. Was sick by 12:15 am, burning stomach with diarrhea, and vomiting, chills. Other family members had Camarones Rel... lanos and a shredded beef wet burrito. Neither one had any sour cream. I suspect it was the sour cream maybe. My husband said his co-workers had been sick from eating here before. Not everytime, but on more than one occasion when they all went for lunch more than one of them got sick. ”

“Trout with brown sugar glaze. My kid told me her piece of fish was making her nauseous. She thought it was the sauce. I thought she was being a kid. I told her I'd finish her fish. It was the fish. The fish tasted vile, like extra fishy on steroids. I started feeling nauseous and I contacted them.... Thankfully, I hadn't also cooked the asparagus in the bag. I smelled it when I opened the bag, and it smelled like ammonia and there was a little bit of white slime on the tips. So I tossed it. But the fish had smelled fine. (This was within 3 days of getting the box)
My kid's been suffering with nausea and diarrhea ever since. By 3:00 a.m., I was incredibly ill, vomiting bile and stomach liquid for hours and having diarrhea. I was so ill, I didn't realize it at the time, but my potassium levels bottomed out.
I started experiencing irregular heartbeats that became a constant thing. I couldn't get my heart to beat normally. I wound up in Urgent Care for two days in a row, as they tried to bring my potassium levels up.
Now, I have to see a gasteroenterologist and a cardiologist to follow up on the damage the food poisoning caused. ”
