Suspected food poisoning. Symptoms: Nausea, Vomiting, ChillsSuspected source: Bagels contaminated with some other food
Onset: Less than 4 hours
Duration: 4 to 12 hours
Sick: Me
Additional information: Suspect that the toaster had spoiled food that contaminated the bagel, or that the bagel came in contact with something before toasting. It smelled terrible. I only ate a few bites. I'm well versed in public sanitation, and believe there's a 99% chance the illness was caused by the bagel I got from Dunkin Donuts. I ate the bagel at about noon, and had eaten nothing since 6 p.m. the previous day. I spent the entire prior week at my mother's house, cooking all the family meals. No one else got sick. My family affectionately calls me The Hygiene Queen, because I'm so scrupulous about food storage and preparation, having been taught by my mother, an Infection Control Officer in a large hospital. My spouse, an MD, also suspected a pathogen with rapid onset, possibly strep. I emphasize that the bagel had a foul odor, but no visible mold. I probably would not have eaten any of it, but at first I thought the smell was coming from some nearby food establishment, and only after a couple of bites did I realize the bagel reeked of something I would not associate with any bagel ingredients. Cross-contamination is the most likely culprit, very possibly from a meat or dairy culprit. I suggest someone should inspect the Dunkin Donuts in Concourse A at Dulles. | Symptoms: Nausea, Vomiting, Chills
