2 years ago •source foodstandards.gov.scot
Scotland, United Kingdom
In Edinburgh and Lanarkshire, 2 children fell ill after consuming excessive amounts of slush ice drinks, and they required hospitalization. The symptoms observed in these cases were consistent with glycerol intoxication. Glycerol (E422) is a key ingredient in slush ice drinks, maintaining their properties and preventing solid freezing. Glycerol is generally considered low toxicity, but there have been concerns about its potential effects on young children when consumed in large quantities over a short period.Additives must be assessed for safety before they can be used in food. The Food Standards Scotland also ensures that the science on additives is strictly reviewed, the law is strictly enforced, and action is taken where problems are found. They investigate any information that casts reasonable doubt on the safety of an additive.
In case you experience harm from this kind of products, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve issues and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
