I love Trader Joe’s, but their frozen chicken burritos with refried beans have to have something wrong with them. I ate one at 5 pm yesterday, and by 4 pm today, I had very bad cramps that turned into diarrhea and chills. What started out as a large amount of poop has turned into watery diarrhea and serious chills in the last 2 hrs. I ate no other likely culprits yesterday and today: plain white rice, an Homeycrisp apple, Skippy peanut butter, Nature Valley granola bars, refrigerated So Delicious coconut milk, and one of these burritos. I haven’t consumed any other protein since Saturday night (2 days ago,) and it was frozen shrimp that everyone in myhouse ate for dinner. I feel like the TJ’s carne asada burritos give me issues too, but this has been going on for the last 3 hrs to no avail. | Symptoms: Diarrhea, Cramps, Chills

It wouldn’t happen almost 12 hours later. You probably have a stomach bug.

Hi, thanks for your comment. TIP: Onset times for food poisoning vary greatly. Chemical contamination can be within minutes, but there are other pathogens in which the onset of symptoms is not immediate and can show up later (e.g. Campylobacter - 2 to 5 days; E. coli - 1 to 8 days; Vibrio - 1 to 7 days). Foodborne illnesses tend to reproduce in your system where the infection can enter the body into massive loads. If an infection is present, it may take 10 to 100 days to spread. Foodborne diseases generally take 4-24 hours to incubate before showing symptoms but sometimes can come within 6 to 16 hours after consumption. Additionally, how, when, and if you become ill after eating contaminated food will depend not only on the ‘bug’, but also the amount of exposure, your age, and your health.
