Yum Brands, the parent company of Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and KFC, has voluntarily removed onions from select restaurants due to concerns over an E. coli outbreak. The outbreak, believed to be linked to onions in McDonald's Quarter Pounders, has resulted in 49 reported illnesses across 10 states and one fatality in United States. The E. coli outbreak was first identified by the CDC, and subsequent investigations have pointed to the onions as the likely source of contamination. McDonald's has since removed the Quarter Pounder from its menu in approximately one-fifth of its restaurants. The FDA continues to investigate the outbreak, with a focus on the beef patty and slivered onion served in the Quarter Pounder. The recalled onions:
- Were supplied by Taylor Farms
- Distributed by US Foods.
- The specific products include:
30-pound bags of peeled jumbo yellow onions
4/5-pound bags of 3/8-inch diced fresh yellow onions
5-pound bags of fresh diced yellow onions
6/5-pound bags of whole peeled yellow onions.
- The exact number of recalled products has not been disclosed.
Consumers are advised not to consume the onions.
In case you are experiencing E. coli symptoms such as watery diarrhea (often bloody), vomiting; stomach cramps; and mild fever, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
