Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States

The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) has reported an outbreak of illnesses linked to the consumption of raw milk, affecting 11 individuals, with two requiring hospitalization. The illnesses have been identified in Baton Rouge, with patients testing positive for campylobacteriosis and/or cryptosporidiosis.

The outbreak, which began on April 23, 2026, involves individuals who consumed raw milk from three different milking operations in Louisiana. The LDH is actively investigating the situation and warns that additional cases may emerge. Raw milk, which is unpasteurized, can harbor harmful bacteria and parasites, posing health risks, particularly to vulnerable groups such as young children, pregnant women, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

The issue was discovered after several individuals reported symptoms consistent with campylobacteriosis and cryptosporidiosis, including diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. These symptoms typically appear two to ten days after exposure and can last up to three weeks. The LDH is urging those who have consumed raw milk and are experiencing symptoms to seek medical attention. The sale of raw milk in Louisiana is restricted to animal or pet consumption, and the LDH does not regulate the production of raw milk or raw milk products.
