Canary Islands, Spain
Eight people have fallen ill due to a suspected histamine contamination in La Palma, Spain, after consuming fish purchased outside regular distribution channels. One individual is hospitalized at the Hospital Universitario de La Palma. Health authorities have launched an investigation into the outbreak to prevent further cases. The outbreak, linked to the consumption of bluefish, has resulted in mild symptoms among the affected individuals, with one requiring hospital care. Symptoms reported include itching, burning sensations in the mouth and throat, facial redness and swelling, headaches, dizziness, and gastrointestinal issues. The "Dirección General de Salud Pública" has activated the necessary protocols and is conducting an epidemiological study to trace the source of the contamination.
The issue was first identified on July 22, when the initial cases were reported at the Los Llanos de Aridane Health Center. Patients exhibited symptoms approximately two hours after consuming the contaminated fish. Health officials suspect histamine contamination, which can occur when fish is not stored at the correct temperature. The investigation continues as authorities monitor for additional cases and remind the public to purchase fish only from regulated and sanitary-approved channels.
If you or a loved one are harmed or experiencing any symptoms, it is important to report it. Reporting can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
