The Norwegian Institute of Public Health has identified an outbreak of listeriosis caused by Listeria monocytogenes, affecting six individuals. Four of the affected had consumed smalahove jam, sausage, or smalahove from Smalahovetunet Voss. The cases are located in Vestland, Østfold, and Akershus in Norway. The outbreak has seen six people, aged 60 to 90, hospitalized between January 2025 and January 2026. The infected individuals include four women and two men. Genetic testing revealed that all six patients shared the same bacterial strain, suggesting a common source of infection. The products from Smalahovetunet Voss have been withdrawn from the market as a precautionary measure.
The outbreak was discovered after interviews with five of the six patients revealed that four had consumed products from Smalahovetunet Voss. The Norwegian Veterinary Institute found Listeria monocytogenes in unopened sausage rolls and opened pickles from the homes of two patients. These samples are being sequenced to confirm the source. The Norwegian Food Safety Authority has also conducted inspections and collected samples
