Mushroom Poisoning Outbreak in France Affects Hundreds
1 month ago •source anses.fr
France
Since July 1, 2025, approximately 500 cases of mushroom poisoning have been reported in France, with a significant increase observed in September. The poisonings, linked to wild mushroom consumption, have resulted in digestive issues and, in severe cases, kidney and liver damage. The outbreak is primarily due to misidentification of toxic mushrooms as edible varieties. The rise in poisoning cases is attributed to the confusion between edible mushrooms like the girolle and toxic ones such as the Jack-o’-lantern and the deadly death cap. These toxic mushrooms can cause severe digestive disorders and, in some cases, fatal hepatitis. The peak of the outbreak is anticipated in October, coinciding with the height of the mushroom picking season.
The outbreak was identified through reports from poison control centers, which noted an uptick in cases as the mushroom picking season commenced. Data from 2024 showed similar trends, with a total of 1,363 cases reported, including severe instances and fatalities. The ongoing monitoring and analysis by health authorities have highlighted the need for increased awareness and caution among mushroom foragers.
