In Sweden, an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis linked to contaminated eggs has sickened seven people across four regions. The infections occurred between August 2 and August 14, 2025, and have prompted recalls from major retailers including Axfood, ICA, and Lidl Sweden. The outbreak involves a variant of Salmonella Enteritidis previously associated with laying hens and contaminated eggs. Interviews conducted by regional infectious disease control authorities suggest that the illnesses may be connected to the consumption of eggs that were recalled on August 27. The affected products include various pack sizes of eggs from indoor free-range hens.
The issue was identified through routine interviews with infected individuals, which pointed to a common source of contamination. Further microbiological testing is being conducted by the Public Health Agency to confirm the link between the recalled eggs and the outbreak. Ongoing investigations involve collaboration among regional infectious disease control units, the Swedish Board of Agriculture, the Swedish National Food Agency, and other relevant authorities.
