Salmonella Outbreak linked to Cracker Barrel

7 months ago source facebook.com

United States

Cracker Barrel, a popular restaurant chain, is currently under investigation by the Coles County Health Department and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) due to a Salmonella outbreak. As of May 23, 2025, ten cases of Salmonella have been reported, with five of the affected individuals having consumed food from the Cracker Barrel in Mattoon.

The issue was first identified when the IDPH public health investigators noticed a pattern in the reported cases of Salmonella. Five of the ten individuals affected had eaten at the Cracker Barrel in Mattoon, leading to the suspicion of a possible link. In response to the outbreak, Cracker Barrel voluntarily closed its Mattoon location early on May 23, 2025, to conduct a thorough deep cleaning. The restaurant is also cooperating with the Coles County Health Department to identify the source of the infections.

The Salmonella outbreak has raised concerns about food safety. Symptoms of this foodborne illness typically begin 6 hours to 6 days after consuming contaminated food and can include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. These symptoms usually persist for 4-7 days, and while most people recover without treatment, older individuals or those with weakened immune systems may require additional medical care.
