A Salmonella outbreak linked to raw oysters has sickened 64 people across 22 states, according to health officials. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are investigating to identify the source of the contaminated oysters. The states with reported cases include Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, North Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Tennessee, Maryland, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Massachusetts, South Carolina, Texas, Georgia, New Jersey, Virginia, New York, and Pennsylvania. The outbreak, which has led to 20 hospitalizations but no deaths, began with illnesses reported from June 21 to November 28, 2025. The CDC notes that the actual number of affected individuals is likely higher, as many recover without seeking medical care or being tested for Salmonella.
The problem was discovered through epidemiologic data collected by public health officials, who interviewed sick individuals about their recent food consumption. Of the 27 people interviewed, 74% reported eating raw oysters. The investigation remains open as the CDC and FDA work to trace the source of the contaminated oysters. No recall has been issued at this time.
