Three cases of foodborne botulism have been reported in Arizona, USA, linked to the consumption of homemade fermented swordfish. Among those affected is a 24-year-old woman, who is currently hospitalized in Phoenix. The outbreak has raised concerns about the safety of consuming fermented foods. The outbreak was traced back to a gathering where she and several friends sampled the homemade fermented swordfish, believed to be beneficial for gut health. Shortly after, she experienced severe symptoms, including difficulty swallowing and breathing, leading to her hospitalization. Botulism, a rare but serious illness, can cause paralysis and respiratory failure if not treated promptly.
After her diagnosis of botulism at St. Joseph's Medical Center and Barrow Neurological Institute, two friends who had also consumed the fermented swordfish developed similar symptoms and were briefly hospitalized. Their diagnoses helped confirm the shared exposure to homemade fermented swordfish as the likely source of illness.
