Authorities in Lithuania are investigating two cases of foodborne botulism linked to fish sold at a market in Vilnius. The State Food and Veterinary Service (VMVT) is conducting the investigation after two individuals fell ill from consuming the contaminated product. The outbreak was reported following an inspection by VMVT at a market in Vilnius, prompted by a notification from the National Public Health Center (NVSC). The investigation revealed that both patients had consumed dried roach fish purchased from this market. Inspectors identified two traders selling fish at the location, uncovering multiple violations related to hygiene, product storage, handling, and traceability. Fish samples were collected for laboratory testing to confirm the presence of Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria responsible for botulism.
The problem came to light when the NVSC received reports of the two suspected cases of botulism. Epidemiological work traced the source back to the market where the fish was sold. This incident highlights the importance of stringent food safety practices, as botulism, although rare, poses significant health risks.
