Public Health Wales has concluded an investigation into a food poisoning outbreak at The Corner House Inn in Llangynwyd, near Maesteg. The outbreak, caused by Clostridium perfringens, affected 43 individuals. The outbreak investigation was a collaborative effort involving Public Health Wales, Shared Regulatory Services, the Food Standards Agency, and Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. An epidemiological study pinpointed the consumption of meat from a roast dinner served at the inn as the likely source of the infection. Clostridium perfringens, a bacteria commonly found in raw meat and the environment, can cause illness when food is improperly stored after cooking, allowing the bacteria to proliferate.
The problem was discovered following reports of illness from individuals who had dined at The Corner House Inn. Laboratory testing confirmed the presence of Clostridium perfringens as the cause of the symptoms, which typically include diarrhea and stomach cramps. The investigation was thorough, and the inn cooperated fully with health authorities, ensuring that there is no continuing risk to patrons.
