Outbreak

Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, 50 Ken Hayes Dr, Bourbonnais, Kankakee County, IL, USA

50 Ken Hayes Drive, Bourbonnais, 60914 Illinois, United States

The Kankakee County Health Department (KCHD) and the Illinois Department of Public Health are investigating a Salmonella outbreak linked to the Cracker Barrel in Bourbonnais, with eight confirmed cases as of May 14, 2024.

The outbreak has been traced back to prepared food from the Cracker Barrel located at 50 Ken Hayes Dr. The restaurant voluntarily closed its doors on May 4, 2024, and is currently cooperating with the KCHD to identify the source of the infections. The health department has conducted an environmental assessment of the establishment and provided guidance on safe food handling practices and environmental cleaning to prevent further spread of the disease.

The discovery of the problem came to light after the KCHD identified a pattern of Salmonella infections among individuals who had consumed food from the Cracker Barrel. The department has since issued an alert to area physicians about the outbreak, providing medical guidance. Symptoms of Salmonella typically include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, which usually appear between 6 hours and 6 days after consuming contaminated food. The KCHD continues to monitor the situation closely for additional reports of illness.
