November 10th, 2025:
Public Health has completed an investigation into a Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O121 outbreak linked to Taste of Yemen in Kent, Washington. Two individuals fell ill after consuming chicken dishes at the restaurant on July 21 and July 23, 2025. One person required hospitalization, but no deaths have been reported.
The affected individuals exhibited symptoms typical of STEC infections, including nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhea, and fever. The investigation revealed no sick restaurant workers. On October 9, 2025, Public Health inspected the restaurant and identified several issues that could facilitate the spread of harmful bacteria, such as inadequate separation of sinks for washing raw meat and vegetables, and improper cleaning of tools and surfaces used for raw chicken.
The outbreak was discovered after the two sick individuals reported their symptoms to Public Health, which then conducted laboratory tests confirming the presence of the same strain of STEC (O121) in both cases. The restaurant has been advised on corrective measures to prevent future occurrences, and Public Health will continue to monitor the situation to ensure compliance with food safety standards.
