Central District Health (CDH) is investigating a foodborne illness outbreak in Ada County, where nine residents have fallen ill after consuming unpasteurized (raw) milk. The outbreak involves Shiga toxin–producing Escherichia coli (STEC), with two children currently hospitalized due to serious complications. The investigation by CDH includes interviews with affected individuals and testing of raw milk samples. Several cases have been confirmed as STEC infections, which can cause severe symptoms such as bloody diarrhea and vomiting. These symptoms can lead to serious complications, especially in children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Two children have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a severe complication of E. coli infection that can result in kidney failure.
The illnesses have been linked to raw cow milk products from R Bar H, which has voluntarily pulled its products from stores and suspended production during the investigation. The investigation is ongoing, and health officials are urging those who have consumed raw milk and experience symptoms to seek medical care and report their illness to local health authorities.
