E. Coli Outbreak in St. Louis County Linked to Six Other States

11 months ago source spectrumlocalnews.com

Des Moines, Iowa, United States

An E. coli outbreak in St. Louis County has been linked to six other states, with 115 cases reported, including 13 hospitalizations, according to the St. Louis County Department of Public Health (DPH). The outbreak has been traced back to events catered by or hosted at Andre’s Banquets and Catering. Genetic testing has confirmed 25 cases directly linked to the business, with additional cases reported in Illinois, Kansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Ohio, and Indiana. The DPH suggests that the exposure came from leafy greens served at these events.

The outbreak was discovered after a high number of surveys were received from individuals who fell ill after attending events catered by Andre’s. Despite lettuce samples from Andre’s testing negative for E. coli, the DPH named the business as the link to the outbreak before testing was completed. The owner of Andre’s maintains that his business is not responsible for the outbreak and has cooperated with authorities since the investigation began.

As the investigation nears its conclusion, the DPH continues to collaborate with state and national health partners to review data and finalize findings. The department emphasizes the importance of public education on food safety and prevention measures.

In case you are experiencing E. coli symptoms such as watery diarrhea (often bloody), vomiting; stomach cramps; and mild fever, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
