French Listeriosis Outbreak Potentially Linked to Cheese
6 months ago •source agriculture.gouv.fr
France
A listeriosis outbreak in France has been linked to pasteurized milk cheeses from the Chavegrand company, with 21 cases reported, including two deaths. The outbreak, caused by Listeria monocytogenes, has affected individuals aged 34 to 95, primarily since June 2025. The affected products were distributed nationally in France and internationally.Health authorities, including Santé Publique France and the Pasteur Institute, identified a potential connection between the listeriosis cases and Chavegrand's pasteurized milk cheeses. This conclusion was reached through epidemiological and microbiological investigations conducted in collaboration with the General Directorate of Food and the General Directorate of Health. As a precautionary measure, Chavegrand is recalling all cheese batches produced before June 23, 2025.
The issue was discovered after health authorities noted the similarity in bacterial strains among the reported cases. Further investigations revealed convergent epidemiological and microbiological evidence linking the illnesses to the consumption of Chavegrand's cheeses. The recall affects soft cheeses with a bloomy rind made from pasteurized cow's or goat's milk, which were sold under various brands until August 9, 2025.
The affected products can be recognized by the information provided on the RappelConso notices, showing the health mark FR 23.117.001 CE/UE, or by checking directly at the point of purchase.
