October 24, 2023

CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the FDA are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Thompson infections linked to Fresh Diced Onions. As of October 24, 2023, a total of 73 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella have been reported from 22 states (AZ, CA, CO, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, MA, MI, MT, ND, NY, OH, KY, OR, TN, TX, UT, VA, WI, and WY). 15 people have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported. Illnesses started on dates ranging from August 2, 2023, to September 25, 2023.

According to CDC data, of 19 people with information available, 14 cases had contact with fresh diced onions before falling ill. FDA's traceback data also links Gills Onions to places where these individuals ate before getting sick. The investigation is ongoing.

On October 24, 2023, Gills Onions recalled fresh diced onion products. CDC is advising people to check their freezers and to not eat any recalled diced onions. Businesses should not sell or serve recalled Gill’s Onions products or use recalled onion products in other foods.

The affected Gills Onions Brand products include lots of diced yellow onions (3lb bags and 8 oz cups), diced celery and onions (8 oz cups), diced mirepoix (10 oz cups), and diced red onions (8 oz cups). Use-by dates between August 8, 2023, and August 28, 2023. Recalled onions were sold in select stores and were also sent to restaurants and institutions nationwide and in Canada.

In case you are experiencing Salmonella symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
