Denmark
A recent outbreak of listeria linked to a Danish company has resulted in multiple illnesses across the EU. The outbreak, traced to fish products, has sickened numerous individuals, with Denmark reporting the highest incidence. The outbreak was traced back to fish cakes and smoked salmon, which have been identified as recurring sources of listeria infections from 2022 to 2024. The European Commission has responded by tightening regulations on listeria levels in ready-to-eat foods, effective from July 2026. These measures aim to curb the rising number of infections and ensure food safety across the region.
The problem was discovered through genetic mapping, which allowed authorities to trace the listeria bacteria from affected patients back to specific products and the company responsible. This method has highlighted the need for improved control measures within the food industry to prevent future outbreaks and ensure consumer safety.
