Listeria Outbreak Linked to Fish Meatballs

1 year ago source ssi.dk

Denmark

The Statens Serum Institut (SSI), the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, and the DTU Food Institute have identified ready-made fish meatballs as the source of a recent Listeria outbreak. Seven people have fallen ill across Denmark, with one fatality reported. Since mid-July, seven cases of Listeria monocytogenes infection have been registered by the SSI. The patients, aged between 33 and 89, include six women and one man. All patients were hospitalized, and one has died within 30 days of the bacteria's detection. Two additional cases have been reported abroad, with one patient having consumed the same Danish fish meatballs.

The outbreak was traced back to the fish meatballs after bacteria from patients were compared with environmental samples from the manufacturer, Jeka Fish. The bacteria were found to be identical, and patients reported having consumed the fish meatballs. The manufacturer has since recalled several varieties and batches of the product.

The recalled fish meatballs were sold in Lidl and Coop stores, including SuperBrugsen, Kvickly, Dagli'Brugsen, Brugsen, and 365 Discount. The DTU Food Institute, SSI, and the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration have used DNA typing to analyze and compare the Listeria bacteria found in patients and samples from the company. The type is identical to that found in fish patties from the same company in 2022.
