Two people have died and 14 others have been infected after eating Louisiana-harvested oysters contaminated with Vibrio vulnificus, state health officials confirmed. The cases were linked to separate restaurants in Louisiana and Florida.According to the Louisiana Department of Health, there have been 34 Vibrio infections and six deaths statewide in 2025, marking the highest annual total in more than a decade. Jennifer Armentor, who oversees the state’s molluscan shellfish program, described the current spread as “prolific” during a meeting of the Louisiana Oyster Task Force on Tuesday.
The problem was discovered through routine health department checks and reports from affected individuals. The Department of Health requires restaurants to maintain detailed records of oyster harvesting locations and dates, which facilitated the traceability of the contaminated batches. These records are crucial for identifying the source of outbreaks and implementing timely interventions to prevent further cases.
