July 17th, 2025:
The FDA and CDC are investigating a multistate Salmonella Anatum outbreak linked to Deep-brand frozen sprouted mat (moth) beans and moong (mung) beans, affecting 11 individuals across 10 states. The outbreak has resulted in four hospitalizations, with no reported deaths. The affected products were distributed nationwide.
The outbreak was identified following routine product sampling by the FDA in May 2025, which tested positive for Salmonella. Whole genome sequencing confirmed that the strain in the samples matched the one causing the illnesses. Epidemiological data from the CDC revealed that four of the six individuals with available information had consumed the implicated beans before falling ill. Illnesses were reported between October 22, 2024, and June 24, 2025.
The issue came to light when the FDA's routine sampling of Deep-brand frozen sprouted mat and moong beans detected Salmonella contamination. The Chetak LLC Group, responsible for these products, has initiated a recall of specific lot codes. The FDA and Chetak LLC Group are collaborating to investigate the source of contamination, and production has been suspended pending further investigation. The FDA's investigation is ongoing
