A Salmonella outbreak in the UK has affected over 120 individuals, with initial investigations pointing to imported eggs as the potential source. The outbreak involves the Salmonella Enteritidis strain, with cases reported primarily in England, and a few in Scotland and Wales. To date, 123 infections have been confirmed, with London reporting the highest number of cases at 67. Other affected areas include the East of England with 23 cases and the South East with 21.In August, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) detected a rise in Salmonella Enteritidis cases through whole genome sequencing data. Patients range from 1 to 92 years old, with a median age of 30, and the most affected group being children up to 9 years old.
The outbreak was identified after UKHSA noticed an increase in cases starting from May 27 to October 20. The connection to eggs was established through patient interviews and food supply chain investigations. Several businesses have been linked to a common distributor of imported eggs.
