France
A Salmonella outbreak in France has been traced to contaminated eggs imported from Poland. Sixteen individuals, including nine males and seven females, have fallen ill, with four requiring hospitalization. The affected individuals, aged between 1 and 55, primarily experienced fever and diarrhea, as reported by Santé publique France. The eggs were sold in supermarkets across France. The outbreak was identified as Salmonella Enteritidis, with the initial connection made through patient surveys. These surveys highlighted a correlation between the onset of symptoms and the consumption of products containing raw eggs. The source of these eggs was confirmed by examining the codes printed on the eggshells. The contaminated eggs had already been consumed by the time the link was established, so no recall was issued.
The Direction Générale de l'Alimentation (DGAL) has communicated with Polish authorities to ensure that measures are taken to protect consumer safety. The investigation into the outbreak began after patients reported symptoms consistent with Salmonella infection. The link to Polish eggs was established through detailed patient interviews and analysis of the food products consumed.
