California, United States
Sacramento – Vega Farms, Inc. has issued a recall for its in-shell eggs after an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis was linked to their consumption. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) reports that 63 residents have fallen ill, with 13 hospitalizations, but no deaths. The affected eggs were distributed across Northern California. The outbreak was identified after CDPH, in collaboration with local health departments and the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), traced the source of the infections to Vega Farms' eggs. An inspection at the farm revealed multiple samples testing positive for Salmonella. The eggs were sold to various outlets, including restaurants, grocery stores, co-ops, and farmers' markets.
The issue came to light when CDPH and CDFA conducted tests on egg and environmental samples at Vega Farms, finding a match between the Salmonella strain in the samples and that in the sick individuals. Following these findings, Vega Farms voluntarily recalled the eggs on December 5, 2025. CDPH is actively working with local health jurisdictions to ensure the recalled products are removed from circulation.
