Outbreak
Royal Caribbean International's cruise ship, Radiance of the Seas, has experienced a Salmonella outbreak. The incident, which occurred during the September 20-27, 2024 voyage, has affected 180 passengers and 3 crew members. The voyage, numbered 20118, carried 2,172 passengers and 894 crew members. The affected individuals, representing 8.29% of passengers and 0.34% of the crew, reported symptoms including diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headaches, and muscle aches. The causative agent of the illness has been identified as Salmonella. The Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) is remotely monitoring the situation, including a review of the ship’s outbreak response and sanitation procedures, due to the ship’s current location.
In response, Royal Caribbean International took immediate action. The company made announcements to notify those on board of the outbreak, encouraged case reporting, and emphasized the importance of good hand hygiene. Stool specimens were collected from those exhibiting symptoms for testing. Additionally, the company increased cleaning and disinfection procedures according to their outbreak prevention and response plan.
Despite the outbreak, it's important to note that not all individuals were sick at the same time. The reported cases represent the total number for the entire voyage.
In case you are experiencing Salmonella symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
