Salmonella Outbreak Linked to August Egg Company Eggs

The August Egg Company is at the center of a Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak linked to their brown cage-free and brown certified organic eggs. The outbreak has sickened 79 people across seven states, including AZ, CA, KY, NE, NJ, NV, and WA, with 21 hospitalizations reported. The FDA's investigation into the outbreak is ongoing.According to the FDA and CDC, the illnesses occurred between February 24 and May 17, 2025. Twenty-seven of 30 people interviewed reported eating eggs or egg-containing dishes before becoming sick.
The affected eggs were distributed under various brand names, including Clover, First Street, Nulaid, O Organics, Marketside, Raleys, Simple Truth, Sun Harvest, and Sunnyside. Also, they were distributed to retailers, including Save Mart, FoodMaxx, Lucky, Smart & Final, Safeway, Raleys, Food 4 Less, and Ralphs, in at least nine states, including AZ, CA, IL, IN, NE, NM, NV, WA, and WY. Distribution dates range from February 3, 2025, through May 6, 2025, with sell-by dates from March 4, 2025, to June 19, 2025. The recalled products have Julian Dates between “32” and “126” and plant codes “P-6562” or “CA-5330” on the carton.
The FDA traced the outbreak back to August Egg Company through epidemiological data and conducted an inspection of its facility. Environmental samples collected during the inspection tested positive for Salmonella and matched the outbreak strain via Whole Genome Sequencing.
