Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Cucumbers

####Update: December 20, 2024As of December 17, 2024, a total of 100 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella have been reported from 23 states. Of the 90 people for whom information is available, 25 have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. Of the 67 people interviewed, 54 (81%) reported eating or likely eating cucumbers.
Recalled product has been distributed to retailers and distributors nationwide. Several companies have issued recalls. FDA's investigation remains ongoing.

FDA is working closely with implicated firms to determine whether additional recalls of American/slicer cucumbers, processed recalled cucumbers, and products made with recalled cucumbers may be necessary.
On December 3, 2024, Walmart recalled Marketside Fresh Cut Cucumber Slices sold at stores in TX. On December 4, 2024, JFE, Supreme Produce, and Yummi Sushi initiated recalls of food products containing recalled cucumbers at Kroger stores in AZ, CO, LA, TX, and WY, and King Soopers stores in CO.

Update December 5th, 2024:
Around 40 individuals, including students from Newcastle Elementary, have fallen ill due to a salmonella outbreak at the school, according to the Wyoming Department of Public Health. The outbreak is part of a larger, national epidemic linked to cucumbers, with two confirmed cases in the local community.

A Salmonella outbreak has been linked to cucumbers grown by Agrotato, S.A. de C.V. in Sonora, Mexico, and distributed by SunFed Produce, LLC. The product was distributed to retail and foodservice customers in AK, AZ, AR, CA, CO, CT, FL, ID, IL, IN, KS, MD, MA, MN, MO, NJ, NY, NC, OK, PA, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, and WI.
As of November 26, 2024, a total of 68 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella have been reported from 19 states. Of the 50 people for whom information is available, 18 have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. Of the 33 people interviewed, 27 (82%) reported eating cucumbers.
The cucumbers were sold between October 12, 2024, and November 26, 2024. Symptoms of Salmonella infection, which typically appear within 12 to 72 hours of consuming contaminated food. The infection is particularly severe in children under five, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
